Ahmad Jamal, BALLADES (Jazz Village, $16.98) – The venerable pianist, now aged 88, took the trio format to new heights, most famously with Vernell Fournier on drums and Israel Crosby on bass. Now, for the first time in his career, Mr. Jamal has released a solo piano album (three tracks are duets with his long-time bassist James Cammack). Features include a new version of his classic “Poinciana,” two versions of “Marseilles,” and medley Rodgers and Hart’s “Spring is Here” with Bill Evans’s “Your Story.”

Emeli Sandé, REAL LIFE (Capitol, $12.98) – British pop/soul at its finest…

Danish String Quartet, PRISM II (ECM, $18.98) – The Danish String Quartet’s second in a series of five albums, in which DSQ will “present one of Beethoven’s late string quartets in the context of a related fugue by J.S. Bach as well as a linked masterwork from the modern quartet literature (Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bartok, Mendelssohn and Webern).” On Prism II, Schnittke’s String Quartet No. 3 is the modern work, bookended by

Bach’s Fugue No. 24 in B minor, BWV869, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat Major Op. 130 with Grosse Fuge, Op. 133.

BILLY BRAGG AT POLITICS & PROSE ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

Next Monday, September 16, at 7 p.m., singer/songwriter/activist Billy Bragg will talk about his new book, THE THREE DIMENTIONS OF FREEDOM (Faber & Faber, $10), the first title in Faber Social’s new series of political pamphlets. He will be in conversation with David Weigel, a national political correspondent for the Washington Post.

We will also have a copies of his previous books, Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World and A Lover Sings: Selected Lyrics.

Mr. Bragg has a large body of recordings over a 30+ year career. We will feature a couple of his most recent:
