Discussion and lecture-based:

There is a library in the mind full of a finite (or infinite) collection of books that present all of human knowledge to the lucky visitor with a library card. The librarian in charge of this magnificent yet temporal, (or timeless) collection is Jorge Luis Borges. Borges was librarian of Argentina's national library. When named to the position he had become blind. What an irony: a blind curator, obliged to store every piece of knowledge in his mind, and to call on friends and family to read to him from the vast stacks.

Borges, like Milton, like Homer—all great seers and poets who saw in their minds, who relived their lives in dreams and gazing upon mirrors, who saw themselves as others saw them—Borges the poet is the subject and object of our class. We will read his poems closely seeking to identify his obsessions, his concerns with history and disappearance, his word music. We will examine him with our stethoscopes and microscopes and we will finish by becoming permanent members of that universal library.

Borges the writer of fictions and essays is known all over the world. His poetry is equally exemplary and reflects the same mental geography. Let us read Borges the Poet over four sessions, with the goal that our visit to the library has changed our thinking and renewed our literary energy for the days to come as the darkness and the light begin to fall, back and forth, until we become dust and memory.
