Deep Discussion on Writing Craft

Analysis and Discussion with Class Participation. This live class will be recorded and available for later viewing.

The class will help students construct tight and attractive informed opinion pieces. It will also help them break bad habits and improve their writing in general. Discussions will center around how to construct an argument, how to build effective transitions, how to choose verbs that pack a punch and how to select information to strengthen your viewpoint. The class will be especially useful to students who hope to sell their work and hope to write better in their careers. Students will read articles under five headings: Politics, humor, arts and sports, controversy and best-in-show. Authors will include Charles Blow, Michael Gerson, Molly Ivins, Calvin Trillin, Sally Jenkins, Mike Wise, Jimmy Breslin, Ernie Pyle, Connie Schultz and others. Students will be free (but not required) to submit informed opinion pieces at the end of the class, which the instructor will edit and critique.
