This is a seminar-style, discussion-based class
Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution is the latest entry in the genre of “dark academia.” R. F. Kuang’s (The Poppy War, Yellowface) most recent novel is set in an alternate reality 1830s England where British supremacy is supported by magic that comes from combining silver metal bars and the act of translation.
Over the course of two classes, we’ll discuss how Babel uses speculative history to explore big questions about imperialism and the violence of colonialism, the role of capitalism in global exploitation, academia’s complicity in upholding corrupt institutions, and the complexity and power of language.
