Maaza Mengiste - The Shadow King — in conversation with Helon Habila

Upcoming Event
Sunday, September 29, 2019 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Ethiopian novelist Mengiste’s debut, Beneath the Lion's Gaze, was named one of The Guardian’s Ten Best Contemporary African Books. Her eagerly awaited second novel is set in mid-1930s Ethiopia, and recreates Mussolini’s invasion through the experiences of Hirut, an orphaned servant. First compelled to nurse the wounded, Hirut soon takes on an ever larger role in the conflict, eventually disguising a peasant as Haile Selassie to keep hope alive when the emperor goes into exile. Facing rape and imprisonment, Hirut not only survives but inspires other women to actively resist the forces that threaten their homeland. Mengiste will be in conversation with Helon Habila, author of Travelers. With support from Young African Professionals and Young Ethiopian Professionals.
