 LATE ARRIVALS: A FEW MORE FROM 2019

Karrin Allyson Sextet, SHOULDER TO SHOULDER: A Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage (eOne, $15.98) – To honor the long road leading to the 19th Amendment, vocalist Karrin Allyson assembled an all-women band, and assembled a glorious cast of guest vocalists and narrators to tell the story in song. The band is Ingrid Jensen, trumpet, Mindi Abair, alto saxophone, Helen Sung, piano, Endea Owens, bass, and Allison Miller, drums. Historical songs are given a new life with vocalists including Madeleine Peyroux, Veronica Swift, Kurt Elling, and Rapsody. There are also excerpts of significant speeches by (among others) Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, recited by Rosanne Cash, Harry Belafonte, Lalah Hathaway, respectively. The 19th Amendment became law on August 18, 1920.

BERLIOZ: LA DAMNATION DE FAUST (Erato, 2 CDs & 1 DVD, $21.98) – A couple of years ago, the team of soprano Joyce DiDonato, tenor Michael Spyres, conductor John Nelson and the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra teamed up for an award-winning performance of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, which was Gramophone Magazine’s Best Opera Recording of 2018.

The team returns for Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, with DiDonato as Marguerite, Spyres as Faust, Nicolas Courjal as Méphitophélès, and Alexndre Duhamel as Brander.

Harry Nilsson, LOSST AND FOUNND (Omnivore, $16.98) – Harry Nilsson was working on an album of new songs when he died in 1994. Friend and producer Mark Hudson has now finished the album with Nilsson compatriots like arranger Van Dyke Parks, drummer Jim Keltner, and Jimmy Webb.

Jim Sullivan, JIM SULLIVAN (Light in the Attic, $15.98) – In March, 1975, singer/songwriter Jim Sullivan set out from Los Angeles for Nashville; he was last seen walking away from his car (containing his guitar, money, and this follow-up album) near Santa Rosa, New Mexico. He had a successful debut record, U.F.O. (1969), then issued Jim Sullivan on the new Playboy Records. Light in the Attic has re-issued the re-mastered album with a profuse liner notes and photos.
