The Pulitzer Prizes on Twitter: "Congratulations to Anthony Davis ...
PULITZER PRIZE FOR ANTHONY DAVIS

Pianist and composer Anthony Davis won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his eighth opera, The Central Park Five (not yet released as a CD), with libretto by Richard Wesley. The Pulitzer committee cited it as “a courageous operatic work, marked by powerful vocal writing and sensitive orchestration, that skillfully transforms a notorious example of contemporary injustice into something empathetic and hopeful.” Mr. Davis has a long career as a pianist, collaborating with many jazz luminaries over the years, like James Newton and Wadada Leo Smith. He teaches music at UC-San Diego, and has written operas about Malcolm X, the Amistad, Lilith and King Lear.

If you want to hear some of Anthony Davis’s orchestral works, listen to NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND (BMOP, $18.98), played by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, led by Gil Rose. The pieces on the album are “Notes from the Underground,” “You Have the Right to Remain Silent,” and “Wayang V” with Mr. Davis featured on the piano.
