Two new releases for this week:

Rudolph Buchbinder, THE DIABELLI PROJECT (Deutsche Grammophon, 2 CDs, $24.98) – On pianist Rudolph Buchbinder’s double album project, he juxtaposes Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, with the other composers who also wrote variations in 1824, as well as eleven contemporary composers who wrote “New Diabelli Variations.” Besides Beethoven, others composers who wrote variations included Schubert, Czerny, Hummel, Liszt, and Kreutzer, among others. The contemporary composers who wrote new variations include Lera Auerbach, Tan Dun,Jörg Widmann, Brett Dean, Max Richter, and Toshio Hosokawa.

Kandace Spring, THE WOMEN WHO RAISED ME (Blue Note, $13.98) – Vocalist Kandace Springs sings songs associated with women vocalists who most influenced her. Most of the songs have guest artists as well, including vocalist Norah Jones, bassist Christian McBride, saxophonists David Sanborn and Chris Potter, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, flutist Elena Pinderhughes.
