Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Staff Pick

Kingsolver’s modern take on Charles Dickens's’ David Copperfield is the coming-of-age story of Damon Fields, nicknamed ‘Demon Copperhead’ because of his red hair. Born in Lee County, Virginia, to a drug addicted mother during the peak of the American opioid crisis, Demon is the lens through which the novel explores themes of family, addiction, and generational impoverishment in rural Appalachia. Kingsolver’s savage critique of institutional poverty and the systems that perpetuate it is as relevant today as Dickens’s was in 1850. This book is engrossing and heartbreaking, with a colorful cast and a heart-winning narrator.
